Software Engineer Resume: Example, Skills, and Writing Guide
A software engineer resume has to show what you built, how you built it, and what changed because of your work. A list of languages and frameworks cannot tell that story by itself. This guide includes a complete example, a skills framework, and a repeatable way to describe engineering impact.
Table of contents
Your software engineer resume should let a hiring team connect your technical choices to useful results. The example below shows one way to do that for a mid-career backend engineer. It is fictional: replace every name, company, technology, and metric with details you can support.

This sample puts the role, stack, and outcomes near the top. The performance bullet names both the measurement and its conditions; a real candidate should keep the underlying test results or dashboard so the claim is defensible. What to Include in a Software Engineer Resume
Use a familiar structure and put the strongest evidence first. MIT Career Advising & Professional Development recommends tailoring relevant skills and experiences to the role, including technical projects when they demonstrate useful abilities.
- Contact details: Name, location, email, phone, and links you have checked. A portfolio or GitHub profile is useful only if it strengthens the application.
- Summary: Two or three lines on your specialty, relevant experience, and strongest contribution. Skip generic claims such as “passionate problem solver.” See our resume summary examples.
- Technical skills: Group a selective list by language, framework, platform, or practice. Do not include every tool you have touched.
- Experience: Give each role a title, employer, dates, and bullets that explain your contribution and outcome.
- Projects: Include substantial work that fills a gap in your employment history or shows skills the job requires.
- Education and certifications: Include relevant qualifications; experienced engineers can usually keep this section brief.
Software Engineer Resume Skills
Choose skills from the actual posting and your real work. A backend role may value API design, databases, cloud services, and observability; a frontend role may emphasize accessibility, browser performance, and component testing. The categories below help you organize rather than pad the section.
| Category | Examples to consider when relevant | Evidence to show elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | Python, Java, TypeScript, Go, SQL | A service, application, or analysis you built |
| Frameworks | React, Node.js, Spring Boot, FastAPI | A feature shipped or maintained with the framework |
| Data | PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, data modeling | Query design, migrations, reliability, or performance work |
| Delivery | Git, CI/CD, Docker, AWS, Azure | Tests, deployments, infrastructure, or incident response |
| Engineering practices | API design, automated testing, accessibility, observability | A decision or improvement you can explain |
A skills list helps a reviewer find terms quickly; your bullets establish depth. If you used PostgreSQL to tune a production query, describe the query and the measured change. If you took a short tutorial in Kubernetes but have not used it independently, leave it off or describe the learning project accurately. Our general resume skills guide covers selection and wording in more detail.
How to Write Technical Experience Bullets
A useful bullet connects a problem or task to your action and its result. MIT's guidance on writing about skills calls this a Project–Action–Result statement. For software work, name the system and the change precisely enough that an interviewer can ask a meaningful follow-up.
Built or improved [system] using [relevant approach] to achieve [measured or observable result].
Too vague
Worked on APIs and improved performance using Python and SQL.
Clearer contribution
Added indexes and rewrote three PostgreSQL queries behind the order API, reducing p95 response time from 820 ms to 410 ms in a repeatable load test.
If you have a trustworthy metric, include its unit and context. Response time needs a measurement method; a test count needs a scope; a cost reduction needs a baseline. When numbers are unavailable, explain the outcome without inventing one: “Added retry handling and alerts so operators could identify failed jobs without searching raw logs.”
Avoid describing a team result as if you completed it alone. Use “led,” “designed,” “implemented,” or “contributed” according to what you actually did, and include cross-team collaboration when it was central to the work.
How to Present Projects and GitHub
Projects are especially valuable when they demonstrate skills missing from your paid roles. Pick one or two that are relevant to the target job and explain your contribution, architecture, and tradeoffs. A short project entry can include the project name, stack, link, and two bullets on what the software does and what you learned or improved.
Make the link worth opening. GitHub's guide to using your profile in a job search recommends showcasing relevant repositories and making each project understandable with a README, setup instructions, and testing information. Before sharing, check that a public repository is accessible, the demo works if you mention one, and no secrets or employer-confidential code are exposed.
For private work, describe the technical challenge and your role without sharing restricted implementation details. You can discuss decisions and outcomes in an interview even when you cannot publish the source.
How to Tailor Your Resume by Experience Level
Student or entry-level engineer
Lead with education, internships, substantial coursework, and projects. Show what you personally implemented, how you tested it, and who used it. An unfinished tutorial clone adds less value than a smaller, documented project with a clear purpose. You can omit a summary if it only restates your degree.
Mid-career engineer
Prioritize production work: features delivered, reliability or performance improvements, migrations, and collaboration. Keep the skills section aligned with the job description, then use bullets to prove the most important skills. A project section is optional when work experience already covers the target stack.
Senior engineer
Show technical judgment and scope: architecture decisions, tradeoffs, mentorship, incident work, or platform changes. Explain the outcome for users, the organization, or other engineers. Avoid making the resume a management document if the target role expects hands-on technical leadership.
Software Engineer Resume Checklist
Before submitting, make one pass for relevance and another for accuracy:
- Does the top half of the first page show your target specialty and strongest evidence?
- Does each important technology in the skills section appear in a role or project you can discuss?
- Are performance and reliability claims tied to a real measurement or clearly described outcome?
- Do your GitHub and portfolio links open to relevant, documented work?
- Are company names, titles, dates, and verb tenses consistent?
- Does the exported file preserve readable text and a sensible order? Use our ATS-friendly resume guide for a detailed file check.
- Did you follow the employer's requested file format?
Start with the example as a structure, then replace it with your own decisions and evidence. Build the finished version in LeanCV, export the selectable-text PDF, and review it before applying.

Software engineer resume FAQ
Should software engineers list every programming language they know?
No. Prioritize languages and tools that match the target role and that you can discuss confidently in an interview. Group them in a short skills section, then show the most important ones in experience or project bullets. A smaller, credible list is more useful than a long inventory of technologies used only once.
Can I include projects if I have no software engineering job experience?
Yes. Internships, coursework, open source contributions, freelance work, and personal projects can demonstrate engineering skills. Explain the problem, your specific contribution, the stack, and a verifiable outcome. Include a repository or demo link when it helps a reader inspect the work, and make sure the project is documented and accessible.
How do I quantify software engineering work when I do not have business metrics?
Use an accurate measure of the work you can verify: response time, test coverage, build time, defects, support tickets, users, data volume, or hours saved. If none is available, describe the technical constraint, your design decision, and the result in plain language. Never invent a percentage to make a bullet sound stronger.
Should I link my GitHub profile on a software engineer resume?
Include it when the profile supports your application. Pin relevant repositories, write clear project READMEs, and check that public code does not reveal secrets or confidential employer work. A link to one strong, documented project can be more informative than a profile full of unfinished experiments.
